Tommy and I are going to look at the monument on May 6th and will get back with you. Mehlberger was Licensed Surveyor No. 1 in AR and the monument appears to be a memorial of his engineering and surveying service. We need to find out about the surveying marker reference “a line of precise surveying marker” Did you ask the historian at the capital to see if they know anything? Tommy said there was a son that was an attorney in Little Rock. May need to follow up. Ivan L. There’s a “Mehlberger Monument” out at MacArthur Park that apparently needs to be moved. There’s reference to a “Mehlberger Line”. Do you have any idea what the heck it is? I mean is there any positional control value to it or just decorative? Our historic guy (Brian) doesn’t want to give the go ahead to let them move it until he knows what he’s dealing with. Is this marker site specific? We are proposing to move it due south of where it is now. Can we move it? 3 4 The Mehlberger Markers. Date ? A line of precise reference surveying markers known as the ‘Mehlberger Markers’ was established in memory of the man who pioneered efforts to license land surveyors in the State of Arkansas and was awarded Land Surveyor Certificate No. 1. Max A. Mehlburger, who was born in Fort Smith in 1900 and received a B.S.C.E. from the University of Arkansas in 1927, was also a leading professional engineer, having served with highway departments, consulting engineers, and construction companies in several states prior to 1937. When he returned to his native Arkansas as Engineering Commissioner for the State Department of Public Utilities, in 1942, he established his own successful firm, Mehlburger Engineers, Inc. This trail of markers is a tribute from those who wish others to be aware of this life of service.
