Markham Street and University Avenue Dear Mr. Minyard: As the owner of 5817 A St., I object to the proposed change in land use for my property and the surrounding area. One of the stated purposes of the Land Use Plan is to "promote an orderly growth pattern, guide development and infrastructure decisions to create a strong livable community." Changing the Land Use Plan at this juncture to accommodate the zoning requirements for the proposed University Plaza shopping center will not make a permanent contribution to a strong community or a revitalized midtown district. "From all of my research, no area that I know of became revitalized by shopping," said Alexander Von Hoffman, a Harvard historian and urban revitalization expert, in a Democrat- Gazette article on March 29. City planning should focus instead on creating affordable housing in midtown that will later sustain a new shopping district. Sincer- y, Lou Schickel
