HomeMy WebLinkAboutCBC_03 01 2018LITTLE ROCK CITY BEAUTIFUL COMMISSION The City Beautiful Commission held its regular meeting at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 01, 2018, at Curran Hall, 615 E. Capitol Avenue. Chairman, BJ Sanders -Woods called the meeting to order. MEMBERS PRESENT: MEMBERS ABSENT BJ Sanders -Woods Steve Homeyer Bobby Cushman Melissa Henshaw Justin Blagg Three Open Positions Wally Loveless Ed Peek Bob Winchester ALSO PRESENT: Beth Carpenter, City Attorney's Office D. Tracy Spillman, Plans Development Administrator, Department of Planning and Development, City of Little Rock APPROVAL OF THE FEBRUARY MEETING MINUTES: Chairman Sanders -Woods entertained a motion to approve the February 2018 Minutes. Motion: Commissioner Winchester made a motion that the February 01, 2018 Minutes be approved. Second: Commissioner Peek seconded the motion and it passed unanimously. TREASURER'S REPORT: Expense Report: Commissioner Cushman stated there has been no change in the account. It was also stated that he has signed the signature card to authorize him to act as treasurer for the CBC. COMMITTEE REPORTS, UPDATES: Community Proiects City Hall South Yard: Commissioner Homeyer stated that there is nothing new to report. Public Relations The commissioners generally discussed this committee. It was decided that since Commissioner Hancock has not been reappointed to the CBC, Commissioners Blagg and Henshaw would acquire the Chair responsibilities. Previous to this month's CBC meeting Commissioner Blagg had sent a first draft of a CBC trifold brochure to the other commissioners. This was discussed and suggestions were made on how this could be edited and improved. One suggestion included adding the CBC mission statement. KLRB: Commissioner Henshaw stated that she had attended the February 28, KLRB meeting. Items discussed included the KLRB brochure. The commissioners discussed how some of KLRB's ideas could be applied to the CBC brochure in an attempt to bring more attention to the CBC. These included distributing to neighborhood resource centers, community centers, and city facilities. The Witt Stephens Nature Center was included as a possible distribution point and noted that this facility has a display space that could possibly be used for the CBC exhibit. Commissioner Henshaw also reported that the citywide cleanup will be held on Saturday, March 10 with the kickoff taking place at Boyle Park. Supplies can be picked up Monday and Tuesday prior to the Saturday cleanup at the Center at University Center Park. Commissioner Henshaw also stated that KLRB has requested that an additional CBC commissioner join their organization. Adopt -A- Street: Commissioner Loveless proposed that the next cleanup be held Saturday March 10, in cooperation with the KLRB citywide cleanup. Eye of the Beholder: It was generally discussed between the commissioners that this award program officially opens in March. It was also considered to keep this open all year and include seasonal displays. This discussion also included editing, revising, and reprinting the nomination cards. Commissioner volunteered for this task. Motion: Commissioner Homeyer made a motion to allow Commissioner Loveless to update and edit the nomination cards and allow up to $200.00 to be spent on the reprinting. Second: Commissioner Loveless seconded the motion and it passed unanimously. Landscape Awards: Commissioner Homeyer requested that all commissioners consider possible nominations. Chairman Sanders -Woods suggested distributing brochures to local business in hopes of bringing attention to the CBC. The commissioners discussed information that should be included in the brochure and Commissioner Peek volunteered to work on this and present another draft to the CBC at the next meeting. T.R.E.E Fund: Commissioner Homeyer stated that the six (6) trees for the Bowman T.R.E.E. Fund project had been planted. However, after the installation it was discovered that the west side of Bowman Road is scheduled to be widened and the (3) trees planted on this side of the road were dug up and placed back in their containers. These trees were then moved to the City nursery for storage until after the street widening is complete. The commissioners discussed completing this project and it was decided that Commissioner Loveless would contact Public Works, Civil Engineering Manager, Mike Hood to request site plans for this area to determine if planting space for the trees would be available after the completion of the widening project. City Beautiful Exhibit: The commissioners generally discussed this committee and the need to appoint a new chair. Commissioner Loveless discussed a particular book that is included in this exhibit that notes the early history of the CBC. He inquired of the Commission if it would be allowable to "check this publication out" and return at a later date in order to share with an acquaintance that is physically unable to visit the contents of the exhibit. Motion: Commissioner Peek made a motion to allow Commissioner Loveless to borrow the book discussing the CBC history with the condition that it be returned at a later date. Second: Commissioner Loveless seconded the motion and it passed unanimously. NEW BUSINESS: There was no new business. ANNOUNCEMENTS: The next regularly scheduled meeting will be Thursday, April 05, 2018, at 11:30 a.m. The next Adopt -A- Street pickup will be Saturday, March 12, 2018 at 8:00 a.m. ADJOURNMENT: Motion: Commissioner Homeyer made a motion to adjourn. Second: Commissioner Loveless seconded the motion and it passed unanimously.
