HomeMy WebLinkAbout14626 1 RESOLUTION NO. 14,626 2 3 A RESOLUTION OF INTENT TO TAKE THE NECESSARY STEPS FOR 4 THE CITY OF LITTLE ROCK, ARKANSAS, TO BECOME A CITY OF 5 COMPASSION; AND FOR OTHER PURPOSES. 6 7 WHEREAS, the City of Little Rock, Arkansas, is inhabited and surrounded by diverse cultures, 8 religions, backgrounds, and people who deserve to live in a community that celebrates peace, unity and 9 compassion; and, 10 WHEREAS,the accepting environment within the City can do more to create a web of harmony and 11 acceptance that allows people to be comfortable as they are in the world; and, 12 WHEREAS, in becoming a Compassionate City, Little Rock will be able to spread the message of 13 compassion to others and further embrace the responsibility for our actions that permit people to respect 14 and empathize with others around them; and, 15 WHEREAS,becoming a Compassionate City will encourage citizens of Little Rock to work together 16 to alleviate the problems of inequality and disrespectful behavior which will help to end the cycle of fear, 17 superstition and ignorance that creates distrust, division and violence; and, 18 WHEREAS, compassion needs to be a priority in the City for the current and future generation as it 19 can unite the citizens and allow everyone to celebrate each other's differences and similarities; 20 NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE CITY 21 OF LITTLE ROCK,ARKANSAS: 22 Section 1. The Board of Directors endorses the City of Compassion program and agrees to support a 23 three (3)-year Compassionate Cities Initiative, to endorse the City of Little Rock as an International 24 Compassionate City, and proclaim September as Compassionate Cities Initiative and Compassion Little 25 Rock Month. 26 Section 2. The City Manager is directed to take steps to implement the terms of this resolution and to 27 comply with the Compassionate Cities Initiative. 28 Section 3. Severability. In the event any title, section, paragraph, item, sehtence, clause, phrase, or 29 word of this resolution is declared or adjudged to be invalid or unconstitutional, such declaration or adju- 30 dication shall not affect the remaining portions of the resolution which shall remain in full force and effect 31 as if the portion so declared or adjudged invalid or unconstitutional was not originally a part of the reso- 32 lution. 33 Section 4. Repealer. All resolutions, bylaws, and other matters inconsistent with this resolution are 34 hereby repealed to the extent of such inconsistency.
