6687 RESOLUTION NO. 6 , 687 A RESOLUTION OBSERVING THE 150TH BIRTHDAY OF THE CITY OF LITTLE ROCK. WHEREAS, the City of Little Rock was founded on the banks of the Arkansas River in an area with an abundance of fresh water springs at a point where the "Old Southwest Trail" crossed the river; and WHEREAS, the first recorded settlement at the site , later to be known as Little Rock, was in 1812 ; and WHEREAS, a town began to grow near the outcropping of stone called "The Rock, " and on November 7 , 1831 , the town of Little Rock was incorporated ; and WHEREAS , in its 150 years of existence , the City of Little Rock has grown into a major metropolitan area with a population of over 167, 000 persons; and WHEREAS, the City of Little Rock has become the cultural center for the State , providing a home for the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, the Arkansas Repertory Theater, the Arkansas Opera Theater , Ballet Arkansas , the Arkansas Arts Center, the Museum of Science and History, 1 and other visual and performing arts groups; and WHEREAS, since its birth in 1831 , the City of Little Rock has benefited from a stable municipal government and has become the seat of government for the State of Arkansas . NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE CITY OF LITTLE ROCK, ARKANSAS: SECTION 1 . The Board of Directors do hereby observe November 7, 1981 , as the 150th Birthday of the City of Little Rock, Arkansas . SECTION 2. The Board of Directors join with the citizens of Little Rock in celebration of this historic date and look forward to another 150 years of peace and progress for the City and the nation.
