6555 RESOLUTION NO. 6 ,555 A RESOLUTION DECLARING APRIL 15, 1981, TO BE A. PHILIP RANDOLPH DAY; RECOGNIZING THE MANY ACHIEVEMENTS OF A. PHILIP RANDOLPH; AND FOR OTHER PURPOSES. WHEREAS, the Central Arkansas Labor Council and the local A. Philip Randolph Institute Chapter have requested that the Board of Directors declare April 15, 1981, to be A. Philip Randolph Day; and WHEREAS, A. Philip Randolph died May 16, 1979, at the age of 90; and WHEREAS, A. Philip Randolph led a campaign to organize sleeping car porters and to get the Pullman Company to sign a contract with him; and WHEREAS, Randolph, President of the Sleeping Car Porters, suc- ceeded in getting a contract signed by the Pullman Company with the i porters which in 1937 marked the first time a white employer had signed a labor agreement with a black union leader; and WHEREAS, it is the desire of the Board to recognize A. Philip Randolph for his efforts to achieve full human rights for all persons. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE CITY OF LITTLE ROCK, ARKANSAS: SECTION 1. April 15, 1981, is hereby declared to be A. Philip Randolph Day in the City of Little Rock. 4 SECTION 2. A. Philip Randolph is hereby recognized and honored for the unyielding strength of his life-long struggle for full human Irights for all persons and for a labor movement that would be free of all prejudice and which would play a key role in changing society for the better.
