H. GRADY MANNING passed from our midst as result of a
tragic accident which occurred on September 4, 1939. He came
to Little Rock many, many years ago and entered the hotel business.
he continued in that business until the time of his death. He
developed his hotel business in Little Rock and other cities to
the point where it became and was at the time of his death one
of the largest independent associations of hotels in the country.
From the time he first came to Little Rock, he manifested
a deep interest in the growth and development of the city. He
gave much of his time to civic matters. He was a member of the
Little Rock Chamber of Commerce, the Arkansas State Chamber of
Commerce, and many other institutions which demanded much of his
time. He contributed liberally of his money to associated charities
and, in fact, was never too busy to give his time and effort in
promoting the welfare of the city generally.
Sometime ago, he accepted appointment as a member of the
Municipal Auditorium Board and was engaged at the time of his death
withthe City Administration in working out plans whereby the Audito-
rium could be completed and put into active use.
H. GRADY MANNING departed this life as a young man yet ,
notwithstanding that fact, he had crowded into his busy life a very
active career and left surviving him many outstanding achievements
which he had attained and which will serve as a reminder of his very,
very useful life. In his passing, Little Rock and the State of
Arkansas have lost an outstanding patriotic citizen. He will be
greatly missed by his friends, the community and the state in the
years to come.
It is, therefore , fitting and proper that the Little Rock
City Council pay tribute to him for the many outstanding contribu-
tions which he made to the city and to the state generally.
