The City of Little Rock, Arkansas:
re, your committee arrointed to draft suitable resc2 tions
touching the life of former Fire Chief, Charles A. Burns, beg to sub-
mit the following report :
Charles Augustus Purns was born in Little hock on the 2.4
day of • btt , 18?8 , , and at the time of his death on-
June 10th, 1936, was 58 years of age . He never lived anywhere else.
He had been a member of the fire derartment of the city ever since
he joined it as hoseman for Co. 3 on Aug . 1, 1898, and was a familiar
figure at fires in Little Hock for nearly forty years before his death.
He was noted for his bravery under danger and never hesitated to enter
any place into which he sent his men. Years ago he was presented with
a medal by the city council for having risked his life in rescuing
some one at a fire. In 1902 he became assistant to Fire Chief Hafer,
and upon the latter ' s retirement became Fire Chief on Feb. 14, 1933.
He received his education in Peabody school, Little Rock. He is sur-
vived by his wife, a daughter, Mrs . A. R . Kerr of Little Rock; two
sons, !"alter and Robert of Little Rock; two brothers, William of Lit-
tle Rock, and Angelo of Palestine, Texas; two sisters, Mrs. Jessie
Jones of Little Rock, and Miss Annie Burns of Iyew York; and three
grand children. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club.

� e offer the following resoLutions and propose that they
be adopted by the City Council and spread upon the records of the
meetings of this body, and that a copy be furnished to the family:
RESOLVED:
1 . That in the death of Fire Chief, Chafes A. Burns, the
City of Little Rock has lost one of its most valued and efficient
employees, the family a good husband and father, and the public gen-
erally a useful citizen and official; and
2. That we commend to his successor, whoever he may be, the
record of service of Fire Chief Burns and respectfully say that should
the racord;.of his successor be as good as that of our deceased Chief,
the public will be pleased and the lives and property of the people
of Little Rock will be as eafeas well protected as it is possible
under the means at our hands .
3. That a copy of this report and these resolutions be spread
upon the records of the minutes of proceedings of this Council and
that a copy be furnished to the family of the deceased.
Having discharged our duty, we respectfully ask to be dis-
charged.
