12672RESOLUTION NO. 12672
A RESOLUTION DECLARING APRIL 2008 TO BE "CHILD
ABUSE PREVENTION MONTH" IN THE CITY OF LITTLE
ROCK; AND FOR OTHER PURPOSES.
WHEREAS, child abuse and neglect is a problem that crosses all ethnic, social
and economic lines, and its prevention depends on involvement among people
throughout the community; and
WHEREAS, most instances of child abuse are not caused by inherently violent
or evil people, but by parents who are unable to cope with their tempers in a time of
crisis; and
WHEREAS, child abuse and neglect not only harm children directly, but also
increases the likelihood of long term physical and mental health problems, alcohol and
substance abuse, continued family violence and criminal behavior; and
WHEREAS, the majority of child abuse cases stem from situations and
conditions that are preventable when a community is engaged to support families and
provide parents with the skills and resources they need to be effective caregivers.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS
OF THE CITY OF LITTLE ROCK, ARKANSAS:
SECTION 1: That the City of Little Rock supports programs for the prevention
of child abuse and neglect.
SECTION 2: That in order to bring awareness of this community problem, the
month of April 2008 is hereby declared to be "Child Abuse Prevention Month" in the
City of Little Rock.
SECTION 3: That this Resolution shall be in full force and effect from and after
its passage and approval.
