AN ORDINANCE TO CREATE THE LITTLE
ROCK, ARKANSAS, EDUCATION COMMISSION;
TO ESTABLISH A PURPOSE FOR THIS
COMMISSION; AND FOR OTHER PURPOSES.
WHEREAS, one of the goals of the Future - Little Rock process
was to establish an education commission that would be jointly
comprised of City officials, School Board officials, and persons
interested in education; and
WHEREAS, a task force has developed an outline for this
Commission; and
WHEREAS, the Board of Directors recognizes and commends the
efforts of the various groups that try to deal with these
problems, but wishes to'establish a City commission that will
focus its energy on this issue and suggest ways to coordinate
the current efforts and to improve education within the
corporate limits of the City.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF
THE CITY OF LITTLE ROCK, ARKANSAS:
SECTION 1. There is hereby created the Little Rock
Education Commission to be appointed by the Board of Directors.
SECTION 2. The purposes of the Education Commission is to
bring together the resources of the City of Little Rock,
businesses, neighborhoods and citizens as advocates for quality
education for all children.
SECTION 3. (a) The Education Commission shall consist of 15
members to be selected as follows:
(a) One (1) member of the Little Rock School Board;
(b) One (1) member of the Little Rock Board of
Directors;
(c) One (1) business representative from the Little
Rock Chamber of Commerce;
(d) One (1) person selected to represent City

neighborhood associations;
(e) One (1) person selected
education;

to represent higher

(f) One (1) person selected to represent the Parent
Teachers Association Council;
(g) One (1) person selected to represent City
students;
(h) One (1) person selected to represent the
Principals Roundtable;
(i) One (1) person selected to represent interests of
the Department of Health and Human Services;
(j) One (1) person selected to represent the parents
of City students;
(k) One (1) person selected to represent private
schools within the City;
(1) One (1) person selected to represent early
childhood educators;
(m) One (1) person selected to represent New Futures;
(n) Two (2) persons selected at- large.
(b) Except for the initial membership, each commission
member shall serve for a three (3) year term. If a member is
unable to complete a term, the successor shall be selected to
fill the unexpired portion of the term and may then be
reappointed to a full term.
(c) The initial Commission members shall draw lots to see
which five members initially serve for one (1) year, which five
members initially serve for two (2) years, and which five
members initially serve for three (3) years. Successor members,
after these initial terms have expired, shall serve a full three
(3) year term.
SECTION 4. The Commission shall have the following powers
and duties:
(a) To create by -laws, committees and subcommittees that
will effect the purposes of this ordinance;
(b) To recommend to the Board of Directors and the City
Manager such policies as the Commission believes will aid
education within the City.
