WHEREAS, household wastes contribute to many hazardous waste problems in municipal landfills throughout our country and through seepage into the soil; and WHEREAS, household hazardous wastes may be corrosive, flammable, reactive, and toxic and include such household products as automotive wastes, old garden supplies, used paint products, unwanted cleaners and other household chemicals; and WHEREAS, the Arkansas Department of Pollution Control and Ecology has reported that regulations regarding household hazardous wastes are being proposed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and 215 WHEREAS, The Board of Directors of the City of Little Rock is extremely concerned about this problem and desires to educate the citizens about the safe disposal of household hazardous wastes; and WHEREAS, The League of Women Voters of Arkansas, The League of Women Voters of Pulaski County, Environmental Systems Company, the Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation and the Arkansas Department of Pollution Control and Ecology are co- sponsoring a Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day on June 13, 1987; and WHEREAS, The League of Women Voters of Arkansas has agreed to provide the City of Little Rock with a cost /benefit analysis of the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day so that this 24 p-I 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 28 29 30 31 32 33 34 35 36 information may be available for future discussion on how to best address the problem of household hazardous wastes. NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, BY THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE CITY OF LITTLE ROCK, ARKANSAS: SECTION 1. The Board of Directors of the City of Little Rock hereby expresses its wholehearted support of Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day and agrees to co- sponsor the event so that the citizens may be better informed and thereby create a safer living environment.
