A RESOLUTION TO RENAME A PORTION OF

McALMONT STREET TO McMATH AVENUE IN
HONOR OF GOVERNOR SID McMATH; TO AMEND
THE MASTER STREET PLAN TO NOTE THIS
7 CHANGE; AND FOR OTHER PURPOSES.

9 WHEREAS, on June 14, 1912, Sidney Sanders McMath was born as the second
10 child of Hal and Nettie Sanders McMath, and later grew up in Hot Springs, Arkansas,
11 where he completed high school before attending the University of Arkansas at
12 Fayetteville, and
13 WHEREAS, in 1936 Mr. McMath completed a law degree at the University and
14 began the practice of law, interrupted by heroic service in the United States Marine
15 Corps during World War II, including participation in the battles for Guadacanal, the
16 Solomons, and Bougainville, and
17 WHEREAS, this outstanding military career included receipt of the Silver Star
18 for bravery in battle, the Legion of Merit award for exemplary service, and ultimately
19 promotion to the rank of Major General in the United States Marine Corps Reserve, and
20 WHEREAS, in 1946, as part of a major reform movement, Mr. McMath was
21 elected prosecuting attorney in Hot Springs, Arkansas, and began to fulfill an
22 anticorruption platform upon which he campaigned, and
23 WHEREAS, in 1948, he was elected to the first of two terms as Governor of
24 the State of Arkansas, and became one of the first of a line of Southern reform
25 governors, known for highway construction and laying the groundwork for the creation
26 of the Arkansas State Highway Commission, health care and a significant upgrade of
27 the facilities that have now become the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences,
28 rural electric programs, educational and economic development, and the promotion of
29 racial harmony, and

I WHEREAS, his private law practice includes a distinguished career as a trial
2 lawyer and advocate for everyday citizens, and includes being elected president of the
3 International Academy of Trial Lawyers in 1976, and
4 WHEREAS, Governor McMath's professional career, political career, devotion
5 to family, church membership, and reputation as a catalyst for positive reform make him
6 a symbol of all that is good and noble about the practice of law, and a model to be
7 emulated by those who study the law, and
8 WHEREAS, one way to preserve his stature as such as symbol and model is to
9 name the street which runs to and in front of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock
10 School of Law in his honor,
11 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF
12 DIRECTORS OF THE CITY OF LITTLE ROCK, ARKANSAS:
13 Section 1. The portion of McAlmont Street between Ninth Street and Interstate -
14 630 shall be known, from and after the date of this resolution, as McMath Street.
