WHEREAS, visits by officials of Mons, Belgium, to the city of Little Rock, Arkansas, and by Mayor Jim Dailey and Little Rock Sister City Commissioners Alfred Williams, Anthony Black, and Mary Wohlleb to Mons, Belgium, have sparked a mutual interest in the cultural and economic development of the two cities; and WHEREAS, Mons, Belgium, is the Capital of the Province of Hainaut and is a beautiful town situated among verdant fields in close proximity to Brussels, the nation's capital; and WHEREAS, Mons is renowned throughout Belgium and Europe for its impressive Gothic and Baroque architecture, its fifteenth century Sainte - Waudru Collegiate Church, the Fair of the Trinity Sunday that includes the ancient procession of the Golden Chariot and the Fight of the Dragon called "Lumecon," its three universities, and Chateau Gendebien which is the headquarters of the Supreme Allied Commander of Europe; and WHEREAS, Mons, Belgium, has stated public goals that are very similar to those of the City of Little Rock, Arkansas, including, but not limited to, implementing educational and medical information exchanges, developing agricultural programs, and encouraging tourism; and WHEREAS, both Mons, Belgium, and the City of Little Rock, Arkansas are cities of culture and art for their respective areas; and WHEREAS, the City of Little Rock, Arkansas wishes to develop sister city relationships with communities in other countries that share the same basic values as do the citizens of the City of Little Rock, Arkansas. 1 2 3 4 5 6 0 0 23ri NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE CITY OF LITTLE ROCK, ARKANSAS: SECTION 1. The City of Little Rock, Arkansas hereby adopts Mons, Belgium, as a sister city and agrees to be adopted as a sister city by Mons, Belgium. SECTION 2. The Mayor and the City Clerk are authorized to enter into any written documents necessary to reflect this close sister city relationship. Adopted: June 15, 1999 Attest: <2 QLA. e .
