5 A RESOLUTION REAFFIRMING COMMITMENT TO
6 THE ARTS CENTER FUTURE EXPANSION EFFORTS,
7 ASSURING COMPLIANCE WITHIN THE GUIDELINES
8 SET BY PARRS AND RECREATION TO INSURE THE
9 INTEGRITY AND HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE OF
10 MACARTHUR PARK; AND FOR OTHER PURPOSES.

12 WHEREAS, MacArthur Park is one of the City's most valued
13 historic treasures, preserving our cultural heritage, providing
14 valued open space, and attracting visitors to the downtown area;
15 and
16 WHEREAS, the Arts Center has provided the citizens of
17 Little Rock with quality, family oriented, leisure activities
18 since the 1950's and has outgrown its current housing and needs
19 additional gallery space; and
20 WHEREAS, the Arts Center has modified its expansion efforts
21 to lesson the impact on MacArthur Park and its surroundings,
22 limiting its expansion to safeguard the open space and preserve
23 the unique, historic, military significance of the Park; and
24 WHEREAS, the Museum of Science and History is undergoing
25 preparations to relocate to the Terminal Building; and
26 WHEREAS, the Board of Directors of the City of Little Rock
27 intends to form a citizens commission whose sole responsibility
is to ensure that MacArthur Park and the Museum be dedicated to
28
29 the preservation of its original military nature.
30 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF
31 THE CITY OF LITTLE ROCK, ARKANSAS:
32 SECTION 1. The Board of Directors of the City of Little
33 Rock recommends acceptance of the Arts Center expansion efforts
34 within the guidelines recommended by Parks and Recreation and
35 endorses the formation of a commission to develop a Military
Museum within MacArthur Park.
