CBC 03-18-2015LITTLE ROCK MY BEAL;'rE L C0 M M isSI0N The City Beautiful Commission held its annual retreat Wednesday, March 18, 2015, at 3:00 p.m. at Mangan Holcomb Partners in Riverdale. Chairman Ed Peek called the meeting to order. Dana Carney, Zoning and Subdivision Manager, Department of Planning and Development, City of Little Rock. INTRODUCTIONS: Commissioners and staff introduced themselves and explained their involvement with the City Beautiful Commission. CITY BEAUTIFUL COMMISSION — COMMITTEES Awards 1. Website Social Media / Networking Other Cities Committee City Beautiful Exhibit OVERVIEW OF THE PAST YEAR: Chair: Ed Peek Board Liaison: Wally Loveless Chair: Steve Home er Wally Loveless Chair: Steve Home er Ashley Jones Bob Winchester Co -Chair: Chris Hancock Chris Mor an Commissioner Peek discussed the successes of the past year and other areas that could present opportunities to better the CBC. Successes - New Commissioners: Chairman Peek stated the Commission has been successful in recruiting two new commissioners, Ed Hankins and Jordan Thomas. - Variance Cases: City Staff Member Carney noted that the commissioners had been successful in managing the variance cases during the year. Opportunities 2015 Awards - Eye of the Beholder: Chairman Peek stated that more nominations were made in 2014 than in 2013 and encouraged the commissioners to try to continue this trend. Commissioner Hancock suggested having online forms for the Landscape and Eye of the Beholder Awards. The commissioners further discussed the advantages of providing these on the website. - Landscape Awards: Commissioner Hoineyer stated the success was due in part to the harder choices and recipients were all well deserving of the award. Chairman Peek also noted the diverse properties in different locations of the city. The commissioners then discussed possible properties for 2015 Landscape Awards. - Landmark Award: The Commissioners decided to defer this committee and reactivate when needed. Activities - Adopt -A -Street: Chairman Peek stated all pickups have been successful and only one was cancelled due to weather. Commissioner Loveless stated that Probation Officer Gary Simmons serves on the KLRB Committee and works with nonviolent young offenders. Commissioner Loveless suggested that this could be an additional resource to help with the CBC's Markham Bowman and Chenal intersections. - Garden Show Committee: The commissioners discussed if the CBC should set up a booth at the 2016 Garden Show. Facilitator Robbins suggested partnering with the Arkansas Urban Forestry Council and splitting the cost of a booth. The commissioners further discussed promotional items that could be used as part of the exhibit. KLRB: Commissioner Loveless stated that there was a city wide cleanup March 14. He and approximately twenty-five others focused on Boyle Park and stated that they were successful in collecting a large amount of trash. Variance Funding Administration - T.R.E.E. Fund: Chairman Peek stated that the first project funded by the T.R.E.E. Fund is ongoing but should be successful. The existing trees adjacent to War Memorial have been removed and the new trees should be installed soon. Chairman Peek explains the T.R.E.E. Fund to the new commissioners and how funds are to be appropriated. It was discussed that attention should be focused on where the funds can be used. Commissioner Homeyer stated that he is in possession of the T.R.E.E Fund maps and will enlarge these and bring them to the next meeting. Chairman Peek volunteered to scan these to pdf s and email to the commissioners. Community Projects - City Hall South Landscaping / AKA City Hall Beautification: Commissioner Homeyer stated that this project is moving forward. Commissioner Jones and Commissioner Winchester volunteered to be on this committee Commissioner Homeyer will remain as Chair. Commissioner Homeyer further explained this project to the new commissioners. Public Relations - Website: Chairman Peek stated that the website has been successful and that there has been a smooth transition to the new commissioners who will now be responsible for the maintenance. The commissioners decided to combined Website, Social Media / Networking, and the newly formed Other Cities under the new title Public Relations. - Social Media: The commissioners discussed the advantages of social media and it was agreed that the City Manager should be approached again in effort to gain approval of a CBC Facebook page. The Commissioners discussed investigating City Beautiful Commissions in other cities for information and ideas of how to better Little Dock's CBC. It was then discussed that a small amount of time could be allotted to report on the findings of a different city at each meeting. It was. decided that this would be known as the Other Cities Committee and will be placed within in Public Relations Committee. Commissioner Morgan agreed to Chair this project and provide the reports. - Library Display: Commissioner Loveless stated that he has been storing the materials for the CBC display case. It was further discussed where the City Beautiful items can be displayed. Commissioner Loveless stated that he would make a list of the items. Commissioner Hancock stated that it may be possible to use a display case that the Department of Arkansas Heritage has in storage. It was further discussed and decided that a new committee should be formed to focus on the display materials. It was decided that the Library Display would be known as the City Beautiful Exhibit and will be placed within in Public Relations Committee. Commissioner Hancock agreed Chair this project. Commissioner Homeyer discussed budget and how funds are received by the CBC. It was noted that the city provides $2500.00 a year. He requested that the chair of each committee put together a budget of how much they will need to fund their projects throughout the year and present this to Chairman Peek.
