Re: Variance requests by GEORGE JETT's Service Station
To the Members of The Zoning Commission:
Mr. George Jett has recently purchased the service station
located at Markham and Johnson Streets. I live up the street at
330 Midland.
Mr. Jett is seeking zoning variances to expand by one bay his
service station and to be exempt from the city landscaping
requirements. As a resident of this area, I strongly support Mr.
Jett's request and ask that you give it serious consideration.
Mr. Jett has been very sensitive to the needs and concerns of
the neighborhood. His service station is open only during regular
business hours during the week and on the weekends, and he has
refused to install a public telephone or sell beverages which might
create problems in this area. It is important that he be able to
expand in order to make his business profitable. Also, the
landscaping requirements really would not work well for a service
station. He has already made attempts to place planters in the
entrance area but those have been hit by cars. We need strong
businesses like this which, are sensitive to the needs of the
neighborhood.
Again, I support Mr. Jett's'requests.
Sincerely yours,
T. Martin Davis

Re Variance requests by George Jett's Service Station
To the Members of The Zoning Commission:
Mr. George Jett who owns George Jett's Service Station has requested zoning variances in
order to expand his business and to be exempt from the landscaping requirements. My clinic is
located several blocks down Markham from Mr. Jett's Service Station.
Mr. Jett's business has been well accepted by businesses and residents of the neighborhood.
He has been very sensitive to the needs of the residents and he has provided a convenient and reliable
service to us.
I support Mr. Jett's request for the zoning variances to expand his business and to be exempt
from the landscaping requirements.
Almost two years ago I renovated the the parking area at my clinic and installed landscaping,
not only because the city codes required it but because I was interested in improving the property and
beautifying the neighborhood. The traffic flow of my clinic lended itself to landscaping. However,
Mr. Jett's service station does not lend itself well to landscaping and it is my opinion that landscaping
requirements should be waived in his case.
I am in support of Mr. Jett's rej e'sts for variances
Sincerely yours,
Beverly J. Foster, D.C., D.A.B.C.O.

RE: BP Service Station Landscaping, 3101 W. Markham
Dear Commission Members:
I am writing to support the request of owner George Jett to obtain an exemption of the
required landscaping upgrade for his service station located at 3101 W. Markham Street.
This request will be addressed at a public hearing on February 14 at 10:00 a.m. I will not
be able to attend that hearing because I work.
Mr. Jett and his family have been wonderful business neighbors of our neighborhood
and he has made every attempt to maintain a clean and hospitable business
environment. He has invested a great deal of money in remodeling what was formerly a
disgusting and long vacant site. Normally, I am very much in favor of landscaping,
particularly in a city environment. However, I feel that Mr. Jett, as a small business
person, probably has neither the extra money nor the time to devote to landscaping.
I encourage you to vote to exempt Mr. Jett from the required landscaping upgrade.
Sincerely,
Phyllis Haynes

Dear Commissioners:
Listed below are the 1995 meeting dates for the City Beautiful Commission. Please mark
these on your calendar and make every effort to attend. If you cannot attend or will
be late, please call me (376-2319) or Becky at 371.4770. It is important to attend
the monthly meetings. At our January meeting, we were placed in the embarrassing
situation of having to delay the start of the public hearing until a quorum of City Beautiful
