This is being done after several__ meetings with neighborhood representatives and business owners to see how they felt about the project. Money has been transferred to use for changes in the planning designs. The idea came from Pine Bluff's Downtown Development Corporation. It's an idea that other cities ought to copy, especially Little Rock. Years ago the Little Rock City Beautiful Commission had a couple of murals painted on walls of empty stores, but one was lost when the building was torn down and the other one has faded nearly beyond recognition. Eventually Pine Bluff will have 22 paintings, huge, three- dimensional works of art that tell the history of Pine Bluff and southeast Arkansas. They provide not only art but theater; hundreds come downtown to watch the artists at work on special Mural Watch nights. One unexpected development concerns graffiti. The paintings are applied so as to be nearly graffiti -proof. But the interesting thing is that since the first mural was finished last year, there has been no graffiti anywhere on Main Street. Little Rock's City Beautiful Commissioners need to come downtown again and see how drab it is. Then, take a trip to Pine Bluff. P.O. Box 269, Little Rock.
