1544 RESOLUTION NO. 1544
WHEREAS, residents of incorporated cities and
towns who constitute only 31.2p of the population of Arkansas,
are shown by surveys of the state Highway Department to be
paying 57.8/0 of the motor vehicle registration fees, 62. 9
the gasoline tax and b4.80 of miscellaneous highway
revenues, and
WHEREAS, municipal streets bear 2b. 2p of the total
vehicular traffic in Arkansas as compared with only 15.t* on
county roads, and
WHEREAS, none of the gasoline tax has been used to
maintain municipal streets while county roads received
41,227,451 during the year 1939-1941), and
WHEREAS, city and town revenues in recent years
have declined while the demands for municipal services have
increased thereby creating an acute financial problem for
cities and towns.
NOW, THEREFORE, SE IT RESOLVED that we, the City
Council of Little Rock in expressing the sentiments of the
motor vehicle owners and citizens of the City , do hereby
memorialize the Governor and members of the 1941 General
AssemUly to remedy this unfair .distribution of the gasoline
tax receipts by making available to cities and towns,
through a city turnback, a part of the gasoline tax revenues
which their own residents are already paying -- these funds
to be used for improvement and maintenance of municipal
streets.
